It was a Saturday afternoon and I was in a local art shop. After looking at a few things something caught my eye. I found an incredible collection of prints that depicted some of my favourite superheroes but in a really unique way. It led to me buying the print below of Metropolis.
It led to me wanting to find more about the artist and want to see what else they’ve created. The amazing piece was created by Ciaran Monaghan at Pixel Noise Studios. The prints range from hit movies like Star Wars and Jurassic World; to TV shows such as Stranger Things and Game of Thrones; to video games such as Fortnite and Uncharted. It captures each property in such a unique way creating fantastic pop culture art prints.
Intrigued, I wanted to know more and I had the opportunity of asking Ciaran a few questions about the art he creates.
Matt – Tell us a bit about how you started up.
Ciaran – I actually started creating “digital Art” around 2011 when a friend asked me to do an illustration of his friends as their wedding present. I wasn’t confident I’d be able to do it, but it turned out OK and then more people started asking for portraits. This lead to my icon and legends series where I created vector illustrations of famous faces. My style and subject matter has since evolved into a more minimalist style based on movies, comics and video games.
M – You have a really great style of art for your posters, how did you come up with this?
C – It kind of happened by accident. I created an illustration a few years ago of a Donegal landscape for a customer. Another client seen it and asked if I could create a similar style but for fictional locations, ie Hogwarts etc and so this lead me down the path I’m on now.
M – What would you say your main influences are?
C – Old travel posters, other illustrators, pop culture, movies, games, beautiful scenery.
M – Do you have a preference of the type of poster you do? For example you’ve done a lot of Star Wars and Comic Book movies, do you have a favourite to work on and why?
C – I love creating my own interpretations of movie posters although at the minute I am doing a lot of video game illustrations which I am really enjoying.
M – What type of things does Northern Ireland bring to your work that you can’t find anywhere else?
C – The magnificent landscapes. I have created some illustrations of local landscapes such as The Dark Hedges and the Mourne Mountains. I am planning on expanding this series to showcase this beautiful part of the world.
M – Who is your favourite superhero and why?
C – Superman because he was the first superhero I ever saw as a kid and was actually a big part of my childhood. Me and my brother used to watch Superman every single day after school for years.
A really interesting insight into an artist’s inspirations and influences to create really great art. I can’t recommend highly enough how great these prints are and definitely encourage you to start your collection today!
